The Internet is a very powerful tool, but has incorporating it in the education system been a decision that one can be proud of? Let’s find out. The importance of the internet as a learning tool is significant and has acted as a helping hand in raising the pre-existing level of education in our nation. It has helped in transforming the way students are being taught in schools and colleges. Students are looking up to Google as the new teacher and the Internet as a new school which is open for them 24*7, anytime, anywhere. But technology and the internet are of use only when they’re provided on a good infrastructural level and that is one aspect where we can say India lacks. Schools shouldn’t use the internet as a source of deriving creativity but merely as a tool to assist students whereas students should incorporate the internet as the source of collecting data, not creativity. Getting the work done shouldn’t be the aim, learning should be. With the extensive use of the internet, dependence is bound to be there but the extent to which it affects us is something in our hands. It is quite obvious of us to substitute hard work with smart work. And isn’t this what we have been taught to do since the early days? To work smartly and efficiently? The Internet can work as a tool that helps students in getting the things done smartly and more efficiently whilst enhancing their knowledge simultaneously. The usage of the internet can work as a learning process or just a medium of meeting the deadlines depending on the mindset of the person accessing it. If you use it as a source of gaining knowledge whilst meeting deadlines, it can be a better teacher than the ones in schools because they have a limited amount of time and knowledge and are not readily accessible. This is where the internet comes into play and becomes a constantly accessible source of information. It is a teacher that stays with you even after the school is over. There is an enormous amount of hidden potential and creativity in the youngest generation today. They have a deep attraction for the internet and technology. But what matters is- Are we feeding them an environment that is fit for learning? There are a million things the internet can be used for. I believe education should be the prime purpose we’re using the internet for but are we really? Knowledge is everywhere and learning is a continuous process and internet is providing us with facilities that we can access what was not possible in the past at the click of a button today. So it’s time for us to incorporate the seeds of learning in our students to use the internet as a tool and not the source.
